Davy long took some time to answer some prompts about his life and his music, and here they are. His most recent album 'Babies (Side A)' is available for free download HERE.
I would say I am... a boy who grew up in japan as a son of a missionary family. I grew up on the very northern island of Hokkaido, in a city called Asahikawa. I'm 24 and gaining weight rapidly because my girlfriends mom cooks such amazing food that I don't stop, and I just ordered some cheese fries at a place called pressure cafe in Chicago, seeing Bro. Stephens--you should listen to him. I gained 5 Ibs in the last two weeks.
I've been... playing guitar since I was 15 when my mother asked me if I wanted to learn piano or guitar; I said guitar. She cleaned my guitar teachers home once a week so that I could have lessons because we were very poor when we moved to Indianapolis in 2000 from Japan.
I got into music... because I heard Weezer and Radiohead around the same time--when I was about 14. I couldn't believe how great Blue and Pinkerton, Kid a and Amnesic was. And then Hail to the thief came out, and I listened to those records every day and night. I also discovered Cat Stevens and then when I heard Either/Or by Elliott Smith I became totally obsessed with music. He really sucks you in with his fragile words and melodies.
I wrote a song called...John Has A Lisp about my friends in Dallas that I lived, ate, drank, traveled with in 2006. I was the only straight guy in my friend group there, and I worked at a restaurant called Papadeaux. Anyways, we all got into drugs and stuff like that, but my friend Peter was evicted because he spent all his money on alcohol and coke, which he would spend like 200 dollars at a bar in one night. Anyways, when he was evicted, we decided to head to Indiana where we were both from to clean up and start over. So that song is about heading home to our moms and how I love my friends in Dallas.
You should download my album because... it's free and you can totally use it for any movie or advertisement you want. Cover them at shows if you like them at all, or play one for your crush and say you wrote it. You can only do that if you download it so you can learn it. I have some tender ones that will totally get you a second date.
If I had a time machine... I would be a Smith head and follow Elliott Smith around, or maybe I would rather go back to the 60's and tell Charles Manson that the white album is not trying to talk to him but is just a great album. Probably something to do with stopping a person from killing or becoming friends with John Lennon before he got famous or Elliott Smith.
By the way... I have a facebook page that I just set up for me and so find it. Davy Long songs.
